UNIT 6 - LEADERS: BORN OR MADE

For decades, people have been trying to figure out whether great leaders are born with innate leadership skills or if you can develop people into leaders. Recent scientific studies suggest that leadership is 30% genetic and 70% learned.  

In this Unit we talk about two revered statesmen of the 20th century, Martin Luther King (1929 -1968) and Nelson Mandela (1918 - 2013).

The meaning of the poem "Invictus" is about resilience and the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, a theme Nelson Mandela found particularly inspiring during his imprisonment. Written by William Ernest Henley, the poem's title is Latin for "unconquerable" or "undefeated". 

The central message is that an individual has the power to maintain inner strength and control their own destiny, as famously expressed in the final lines:

 "I am the master of my fate, / I am the captain of my soul".
